Due Date, April 13th, Fast Approaching!

If all goes well, our class will welcome baby chicks into the world on Wednesday. Every other day, we have been candling the eggs. It is a magical time in our day when we darken the room, and small groups gather around the homemade candling light and peer into the insides of the eggs. A time or two, the temperature inside the incubator rose to 103, or dipped to 97. I am feeling unsure of the outcome. And what should I do if the eggs fail to hatch?

Spring is here!

Our little pear trees and Western Redbud are in full bloom, and yesterday Mark planted new raspberry bushes in the corner of the backyard. They are "ever-baring" plants, so if all goes well, we should have a small crop this fall, and many more next spring, then again in the fall.

Chicken Coop Construction, part 3

The chicken coop and shed got the first coat of stucco on 3-27-11. One step closer to finish. The second coat of stucco went on April 2nd.
We have 12 eggs that are possible hatches in the incubator at school. We found the green eggs are not possible to see through with our little light. The others have blood vessels, eyes, and hearts visible. One egg showed tiny freckles covering the whole thing, which I believe was bacteria, and according to what I have read, that egg was not good. We opened it up, and sure enough, nothing was happening inside. I will post pictures of the incubator and the candling light this week.
